Halloween MatchmakingHalloween has some very old and very spooky origins. Some of the myths and superstitions that drove the celebration of All Hallows Eve survive in the symbols and decorations we see every year. Other traditions did not survive into modern day.

Did you know that in the 18th century Halloween was seen as an opportunity for women to peer to their future love lives?

Mashed Potatoes = True Love?
Irish women trying their hand at matchmaking were told to mix a ring into mashed potatoes on Halloween. The man who found the ring in his supper was supposed to be the lass’ future husband.

Snap, Crackle, …Paul?
In Scotland, if a woman was having trouble deciding which of her potential suitors was the right match for marriage, she would take a number of hazelnuts and give them all names. On the night of Halloween, she would throw them in the fire. The nut that burned to ashes instead of popping was the best potential match.

Peel Me Your Name Again
Ladies looking to divine their husband’s true identity had to do a little more guessing if they decided to go the apple peel route. In this scenario, the young woman would peel an apple on Halloween and toss the skins over her shoulder. The peels would then land in the initials of her true love.I hope your Halloween is full of excitement and fun!
