The San Diego County coastline starts at the border with Mexico and runs north to Orange County. In between are over 100 named beaches with a lot of diversity.
The city of San Diego is large and it has many coastal neighborhoods that are almost considered cities of their own. Along the San Diego Coast are some of the best known waterfront hoods are Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, and La Jolla. Just across San Diego Bay is the island and city of Coronado. South of San Diego is Imperial Beach and beaches near the Tijuana River Estuary. North of San Diego you will find several wonderful coastal cities with fabulous beaches. These north county cities south to north are Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. The San Diego coast is home to numerous state park beaches including Border Field SP, Silver Strand SB, Torrey Pines SB, Cardiff SB, San Elijo SB, Moonlight SB, Leucadia SB, Carlsbad SB, and San Onofre State Beach. Many of the beaches in San Diego County are great for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. Lifeguard stations can be found on the most popular beaches in the region, but some of these are only staffed seasonally. Several beaches in the county have famous piers to enjoy and the urban beaches have shops and restaurants nearby.
