North County San Diego lies about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego.  San Diego County is shaped like a square with the four corners hitting Escondido, the La Mesa area, San Diego, and Oceanside, with North County representing the top half of the square.

Some believe that North County encompasses the neighborhoods north of the 805 and 5 freeway merge known as the San Diego Golden Triangle.

And others believe that The North County San Diego region stretches from SR 56 in the South to the San Diego-Orange County line in the North, including the , which includes the coastal communities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana Beach, and the inland communities of Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Poway, Bonsall, Fallbrook, Valley Center and multiple Tribal Sovereign Lands.
Either Way – both coastal and inland communities comprise the area, making the region an excellent place to hike, relax beachside, sail, whale watch, surf,  and participate in nearly every outdoor activity because the topography of the area is both hilly and sea-facing, depending on where you live.

North County San Diego Inland and North County San Diego are family friendly and a good alternative to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Arguably, North County is regarded as fairly upper middle class when compared to San Diego regions east and south of the county.
