Homekey+: A Place to Live — and Thrive
In today’s world, housing stability is crucial for maintaining mental health and overall well-being. When individuals have access to safe and affordable housing, combined with supportive services that address behavioral health challenges, they are given the foundation they need not just to survive, but to truly thrive. That’s where California’s Homekey+ program comes into play.
With a substantial $2.2 billion in funding made possible by the passage of Proposition 1, the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is building on the successful Homekey Program. This initiative aims to provide permanent supportive housing for some of our most vulnerable residents, including veterans and those at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness, along with individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges.
Homekey+ Program Overview
The Homekey+ program is designed to create a framework that encourages collaboration among stakeholders. The program overview document outlines anticipated requirements and invites feedback to help shape the upcoming Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA). Stakeholders have until September 30, 2024, to submit their responses to specific questions through the provided survey link.
What is Proposition 1?
Proposition 1 was a landmark decision passed by California voters, allocating $6.38 billion to expand behavioral health treatment, residential care settings, and supportive housing. This initiative is a vital step in ensuring that all Californians have access to the mental health services they need. HCD is partnering with various state agencies to implement the provisions of Proposition 1, including the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency, the California Department of Veterans Affairs, and the California Health and Human Services Agency.
